It appears that several of the "I survived" books are linked for reviews! NOT good. SO, this review is for "I survived the Joplin Tornado".The date was Sunday, May 22nd, 2011. Dexter James, 11, was in an SUV. Why? The writing is very descriptive:
"..pain was like being stung by thousands of scorpions."
"..wind whipped round him like invisible tentacles."
Is there any escape? Before we find out, the reader is taken back in time to the day before. Dexter is thinking of his brother when he just misses a near collision with a storm chaser. Dr. Gage is in town to chase and document the storm system that is forming out west of Missouri. He talks back to the Super Outbreak of 1974.
Although this book was interesting and our 8 year old loves it, it is necessary to remember that this particular story is FICTION! Is it well written? For the most part, yes but Chapter 15 is very disjointed. It talks about searching through debris and then getting out of bed. This is followed by someone back home and then in the hospital. The author does share at the end the reason for writing the book, along with the actual timeline of the storm, as well as answering questions on tornadoes and how to stay safe if found in that situation. We were actually on the road at the time the tornado hit, returning from Branson. The rain was torrential.
I downloaded this book for my Kindle. I was not required to write a review but chose to do so. Thanks, Liz

I Survived the Battle of Gettysburg 1863 I Survived Book 7 (Audible Audio Edition) Lauren Tarshis Mia Barron Scholastic Audio Books Reviews
This was well written, and well researched. We live in Galena, mentioned in the book, and spent countless hours doing clean-up and mission work after the storm. The only things I noted was that the author referred to Joplin as being in Southeast Missouri, when actually it is Southwest; and secondly, she referenced CVS Pharmacy, though it did not come to Joplin until sometime after the tornado. It is a good read, especially for the kids. The subject was a sensitive one, especially after seeing the trauma first hand, and she did a great job being realistic, but keeping it on a level appropriate for kids.
I bought this book for my daughter so she could have something fun to read during my son's recent physical therapy evaluation. She finished probably 10 minutes before we were done, and then gave me the stink eye when I told her she could then read in her Everything Your Fourth Grader Needs to Know Book...yah, I'm totally no fun that way ;) Actually, I'd thought for sure this would probably keep her occupied more then half an hour and hadn't purchased her a second, so I didn't have anything else on my kindle to hit her with that wasn't something she finds even more snoozy, like Jane Austin. The rating comes from her, she really enjoys the books in this series and this was no exception.
She says this is fictional (as in the characters and events described), but based off of real life events. She gave me a play by play later that day, but won't repeat anything now (I am honest enough to admit I was only partially paying attention because something came up with her brother at the same time and so I tuned some of her description), and she says she doesn't want to be a spoiler for the sake of this review. I think it could be she's not too thrilled I'm interrupting her while she's reading her brand new Animal Jam book to do this. I do remember she was super excited because the main character's cat saves him in the Tsunami. I told her it's a good thing we don't live near the ocean, because our Catzilla wouldn't even think about doing that. She said what she likes most about these books is that they are all about disasters, and she "likes reading about disasters...ha, ha, ha, ha, ha!!!!" I feel like it almost needed to be a "muah ha ha ha ha" based on the tone she used, but ... Anyways, she likes these a lot and is chuckling over my shoulder as we speak about my last sentence and is now trying to sweet talk me into a lollipop. Which I've used to extort the additional information about the book out of her about the plot line
Basically there was a kid in his uncle's house and that's when the earthquake happened, and they got out of the house and into a car, and that's when the Tsunami caught up to them, and if they want to know more they'll have to read it for themselves. I think that's as good as we're going to get. I think she gets this from me, because I won't ever tell her what's going to happen next when I'm reading to her or watching movies with her for things I'm already familiar with. I think this is payback kiddo style ;)
