I got this book from a friend when I was expecting and loved the advice given and tried to inplement what I could. Before I started reading it, though, I saw a lot of negative reviews about how the author says it's ok for your baby to be hungry so I was very skeptical to start reading; however, that isn't what the book says at all-quite the opposite! It teaches you--among other things-- how to recognize when your baby is hungry versus something else (wet, dirty, cold, tired, etc), how to use a schedule that is flexible so your baby can eat at relatively the same times while still not going hungry, and how to encourage night time sleep. My daughter was a great sleeper right off the bat but using this book has helped me give her better nighttime sleep! I knew not to rush in if she gives off one regular cry because she's likely still sleeping and so many other things. I wasn't able to do the eat, wake time, sleep cycle (believe me, I tried!) since my daughter would want to eat again before sleeping. So I did the eat, sleep, wake and it still worked. My friend who gave it to me said that happened to her middle child and she did the same thing. Whatever works!My daughter is 18 months now and we have used a couple of the other books in the series and my daughter is literally awesome!! I know that using boundaries that were explained in the book has been a huge factor in this. I'm a much more competent parent than I would have been without these books. Thank you Baby Wise!!
Also, I have a friend who was super sleep deprived with a three-month-old and I ordered this for her. Her baby went from maybe sleeping 4-5 hours at her longest stretch (which I think was during the day) to sleeping 8 hours at night within a few weeks. She's still working on getting the hours up but I haven't asked to see how diligent she is in the program.

If you're expecting a baby or already have one, do yourself a favor and get this book. It's all about helping your baby to sleep and nap well and reliably, and who doesn't want that? It had tons of sample schedules and lots of troubleshooting tips (e.g. Why is my baby waking up 30min into his nap? Why is my baby hungry early?). Some hospitals specifically advise against this book, but their concerns seem to be about an earlier edition. This is not about strict scheduling, but about encouraging your baby to be consistent with his/her eating and sleeping routines. As adults, we eat and sleep at approximately the same times each day, so why wouldn't we encourage our infants to do the same? Seriously, this book brings some sanity back to the newborn days.
Good book for first time parents. Answers a lot of questions that we had since I read it a little after baby was born. Remember to be flexible with your newborn. You don't have to follow the book to the T. Parents will know what's good for their baby the best out of all the advice given. Use your instinct.
This book was so helpful for me and my husband. We read it together (mostly) while I was pregnant. The content can be pretty dry... there are rules... there are review questions. But, the book emphasizes being flexible and that is important to not get so wrapped up in what time it is or how long it's been since the last nap... you can't operate that way, but that can help guide you. This book is definitely not for everyone. It totally helped us though. I feel like my son's great sleeping habits can be attributed to the guidance of this book. It helped us to have an idea of what was next and what to do next. For example, nursing a new baby is pretty much a constant thing. The book recommends not letting the baby snack/nurse just a little bit here and there but to nurse a "full feeding" and get on a routine - not a schedule. Our routine was sleep. eat. play. sleep. then eat. then play, then baby is tired and ready to sleep. then baby wakes and is ready to eat. and so on. It worked for us. and when baby ate, he ate enough so that he wouldn't need to eat again while he plays or later. Keeping baby from falling asleep while nursing helps baby to not snack later on. It was hard at times, but with encouragement from husband and guidance from this book, we would tickle baby's little feet and sweet little chin to keep him away. He such a pleasant, amazing baby. He is a well rested baby. He is a happy baby. Happy momma and daddy, too. This book is a must read for new moms/parents. Try it out, it may not be for you. It was recommended to me by a friend who wished she had read it earlier.
Great advice and a good reference for schedules. I always recommend this book to new moms.
Babywise was recommended by a friend as a guide to sleeping and eating that made her second child get on a reliable schedule much more quickly than her first. As a new mother the fear of not sleeping for months is very real and I can only hope we are able to fall into a consistent pattern as a family sooner rather than later.
Love this book! Don't be skeptical just use commen sense. This book has helped me get all of my children (3) sleeping through the night, 12 hours, by 12 weeks old WITHOUT crying. This IS not a cry it out book. also, the freedom and flexibility j gain by having structure is immeasurable. Do yourself a favor and drop the stigma surrounding the book. Take the parts you like and use them and throw out the parts you don't.
Baby Wise works wonders. We had our 7 week old sleeping 8 hours at night. Now, a year in, we can count on one hand the number of times the baby has woken up early. She never fusses being put down to sleep. Now we give a copy of Baby Wise to every friend and family member who is having their first kid (#2+ the parents are usually too stubborn to change -).
